In September 2008, Apple released iTunes 8 and with it the song recommendation application Genius. How many songs does Genius recognize? How good are the recommendations? Can Genius be stumped? There was only one way to find out; test Genius' IQ.
There has been one iTunes update since the release of Genius Dell Xps M1530 Battery, and I waited until they worked out some of the kinks before I tested the new application. For those unaware Dell Vostro 1000 Battery, Genius is very simple to use. Just open the Genius sidebar, choose a song and wait for the results.
My two criteria for good song recommendation are: relevance (I don't want to choose Radiohead and have Genius recommend Beyonce), cheap and stump-ability. The latter might be the most important. How much music does Genius actually recognize? Let's find out.
I thought I'd start with something easy so the replacement first song I chose was Bruce Springsteen's "Loose Ends." Genius does a pretty good job recommending several other Bruce Springsteen songs and similar artists like Tom shop Petty & The Heartbreakers and Neil Young. I'm pleased with the results.
Relevance: Passed.
Stumped: No.
Next, I tried Johnny Cash's "Highway cheap Man." I got several other Johnny Cash suggestions and the recommendations were Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and George Jones cheap laptop batteries, which are all acceptable. However, Genius also charger recommended Lee Ann Womack and Toby Keith. Just because Johnny Cash is country (sort of) it does not mean his music is anything like modern country music. I would have liked gateway to see some recommendations for rock music from Johnny's heyday like Buddy Holly and Elvis.
Relevance: Passed Dell Inspiron e1505 Battery, barely.
Stumped: No.
Then I tried something new a little harder, Placebo's "Come Home." I got five Placebo songs I am missing and no recommendations! Not one. I know Placebo are not a popular band in the US, but store they have released seven albums. Genius should be able to recommend something.
Relevance: Failed.
Stumped: Yes.
For my last test I decided to try compaq something different and threw a musical at it. Did Genius give me anything good for "Johanna - 3" from "Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street?" No. Genius discount recommended the rock band Sweeney Todd and not one other musical. It should have recommended other Stephen Sondheim musicals like "Into the Woods" or even "The acer aspire Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack. I am not impressed.
Relevance: Failed.
Stumped: Yes.
While the majority of popular music will be recognized zxcsky09520 by Genius, it is far from perfect. It is brand new and will likely be improved with time, but perhaps Apple was over hasty when naming it. I'd say its IQ is only average.
